If you are planning to become a commercial skipper (or re-new your existing validation) then the Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) course is a compulsory. As a commercial seafarer you have a duty of care to the rest of your crew and any passengers - and this course helps you understand your responsibilities.
The course is on-line so can be done at any time to suit you (the total time is about 8 – 10 hours, but you don't have to do it all at once). The course is broken down into four modules:
- Commercial environment - how you fit into the professional maritime world;
- People – the importance of correct manning, keeping your skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessels;
- Vessel – the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment and how to create and implement risk control and operating procedures;
- Purpose – making sure your vessel is suitable and legal for the work you are carrying out, your obligations in protecting the environment, appropriate planning and situational awareness.
Following the modules there is a mock assessment so you can check you are ready before moving on to the final graded online assessment. The course is on-line so you don't even have to come to the school to complete it – just get in touch and we will sign you up to do on line wherever you wish. It takes less than a day to work through the four course modules, and the graded end of course assessment - but you can spread this over a number of sessions.
Once you have completed the course just send the completion certificate with the Commercial Endorsement application form to the RYA – it couldn't be easier.
