Dear Andy,

I was wondering if you might be able to help me. I am sitting my yachtmaster theory exams over the course of the next 6 weeks, and need some help revision planning. I have all my study materials and the syllabus, but I can't find anywhere that helps me know exactly which parts of the syllabus are in which of the exams. Even the RYA website isn't that helpful.

Would you be able to provide a concise breakdown of the requirements/contents of each paper: navigation/passage planning; meteorology; and IRPCS? It would be incredibly helpful to me and probably also other clubsailors doing their yachtmaster exams.

Thank you!

Hi Susie
The RYA Yachtmaster Theory has three exams:
  • IRPCS (also known as "rules of the road");
  • Meteorology;
  • Chartwork.
During the chartwork area of the course you work through:
  • Revision of Day Skipper Theory;
  • Tidal Heights;
  • Position;
  • Chartwork - course to steer;
  • Pilotage;
  • Passage planning;
  • Tidal Streams.
A good book to work through is the RYA's Navigation Handbook, and the Navigation Exercises.

Hi again,

Thanks for the advice! I just got my final results, 99% in IRPCS!

Thanks also to Sue for tips on remembering lights, Jim for encouragement, and Simon for coaching me on meteorology and also putting up with an overly long discussion on lights for underway/making way.

See you next week!
