To get the most out of the Day Skipper Practical course we suggest that you have the knowledge to the level of Day Skipper Theory.  You don't have to have completed the theory course but you do need to understand:
  • basic navigation (including course to steer, tidal streams and heights, pilotage etc)
  • rules of the road
  • buoyage
  • nautical terminology
  • safety
  • meteorology
A good website to look at is the one from the UK's RNLI: http://www.rnli.org.uk/upload/complete_eCD/fscommand/pop_up_safety.htm
You will also need to have completed your Competent Crew course (see http://www.clubyachting.com/rya-sail-competent-crew.html) or have spent at least 5 days at sea.  At the end of the course you will be able to apply for your ICC (International Certificate of Competence) and sail a yacht in familiar waters by day.
