Like diving? Why not combine a diving trip to El Hierro with sailing. We are offering a two week trip where you live aboard one of our sailing yachts, sail via La Gomera to El Hierro and get the chance to dive in the marine reserve off this unspoilt island. At the same time you also get the chance to improve your sailing skills!
Being the smallest of the Canaries, El Hierro is the:
- most unspoilt (with a population of under 8000 and virtually no tourism-related development)
- youngest island which means that the unique landscape of volcanic rock formations has eroded less with the elements and is most striking
- ...and being furthest West in the archipeligo, El Hierro has the warmest waters in the Canaries!
The two week breaks are being run in June and July on the following dates:
- 4th to 18th June
- 10th to 24th July
During the two weeks you fit in five days sailing, some 200 miles, and also a dozen dives (at least 10 of which will be in the marine reserve).
The waters surrounding the island of El Hierro can be very deep. At some points, the coastal shelf drops off dramatically to nearly 100 metres! With good visibility, you can even get vertigo! The Marine Reserve also has a large variety of caves, arches and volcanic tunnels.
There are some beautiful tropical fish to be seen: trumpet fish, spiny globefish, black coral, and large shoals of black sea bream as well as many others?
You can even see sharks here in summer! Hammerheads are quite common along with groups of big rays, tuna and grey triggerfish.
One of the best places to go diving on the island is in the marine reserve of Mar Las Calmas. The waters here are incredibly calm with great visibility. El Hierro now has over 25 recognised dive sites and together with our Divemaster Instructor you will be visiting the best of them!
El Hierro is formed by the half-submerged rim of a massive volcanic crater which gives an amazing panorama. From the misty meadows, pine trees and juniper forests that crown the island, down precipitous cliffs to a rolling landscape of vinyards and volcanic lava flows leading gently to the Atlantic ocean.
Underwater the scenery is breathtaking. The steeply-sloping volcanic landscape is riddled with drop-offs, reefs, arches and boulder fields - and its one of the top 10 dive sites in the world!
